Canyonlands National Park

I took a leisurely morning, including breakfast at the Moab Diner . I had hoped to breakfast at the Jailhouse Cafe , but it was temporarily closed. This is not uncommon in the off season in these areas. The day was cold, but again, sunny and windless. Really very pleasant for touring these areas.

I then drove the 40 minutes out to Canyonlands National Park . This park is vaster and more untamed than Arches. Arches is very much bold, striking and in your face. Canyonlands is gentler, but spectacular in its own way. It is about vastness rather than single or grouped formations. It does boast Mesa Arch , which is another favorite among photographers. Fortunately the trail was much easier.

At the Mesa Arch parking lot I met Lucy and her parents. Another name sake. After recovering from the scary restroom (I don’t really disagree!) She informed me that her name was Lucy and she was four years old. She was excited to hike to the arch with her parents for the first time. The agreed to let me take her photo with Lucy II.

I went back to Arches for an attempt at a sunset.  The results were tepid, but a clear sky suggested that a night sky shoot might be possible.  I went back out in the evening (the advantage of staying at a hotel close to the entrance).  I got one reasonable - but not great - shot before the clouds came rolling in. Hopefully I will have more chances as the trip continues.

This is also my last day in Utah. Tomorrow I drive to Denver.

Finally, I was able to go back and update the blog post about the Redstone Dairy Goats .
