Today I traveled from Zion National Park to Salt Lake City. I finally had a chance to photograph along the part of Route 9 that leads to and from Zion.
Thanks to my friend A for putting me in touch, I stopped to visit Alexis at Redstone Dairy Goats in Kanab. The rest of that story will be added at a later time as, among other things, I have about 900 images to review before completing the post! --- I’m finally in a position to add a bit more detail and some photos to the post. This was a most pleasant and eye-opening visit. The goats that Alexis keeps are Nigerian Dwarf goats , very different than the standard goats kept by most goat dairy farmers. They are much smaller and give less milk. But that milk is of amazing quality. Very high in both protein and fat, and - I can vouch for personally - it doesn’t taste or smell of goat!. Just very sweet and rich. Alexis also makes yogurt, and provides the milk to another purveyor to make cheese.
The goats themselves were also a revelation. Very sweet and friendly. And the barn smelled only of grass and hay (as did I after the visit!), but again, not of goat or manure or anything else I might have expected. Alexis explained that they are very clean and quite picky about their food and environment. Of course I fell in love with the kids, only a few weeks old! Alexis put them out to experience their first time in the snow.
Alexis and the goats will soon be moving to Colorado. I’m sure the local community there will enjoy the goats, their milk and milk products.
You can find out more on the Redstone Dairy Goats website . --- I drove through Provo on my way to Salt Lake City and had the frustration of watching a stunning sunset with no way to photograph it. Like many others, those images will have to live in my mind. Tomorrow I’ll explore Salt Lake City before heading South to Moab later in the week.
