I started this morning with a trip to Wrightsville beach . This is why most people visit this area. It is big with surfers, sunbathers, joggers and walkers. After last night’s thunderstorm, everyone was enjoying the sunshine. I walked up and down the beach between the piers. The tide was clearly coming in and it seemed like a good time to make my exit.
On my way out, I ran into Jeff and Meg hunkered down by the bluff just next to the exit to the street. We struck up a conversation and I ended up sitting down in the sand with them for a bit. Jeff is originally from Long Island, Meg from Camp LeJeune (military brat). They both now live in Wilmington. As always, I got local tips, as well as some suggestions for other areas along the Eastern Seaboard.
I then headed downtown where I walked around for a bit. They had a small crafts market and a few things were open, but Wilmington apparently takes a while to wake up on a Sunday morning. I grabbed a coffee and some breakfast (it might have been brunch or lunch) at Drift Coffee shop , then went back to my room for a few hours to do some planning and organization.
I went back out to the Riverwalk briefly in the early evening as I wanted to experience it on a calm sunny evening. I enjoyed watching a spontaneous dance performance along the boardwalk.
Tomorrow I will drive to Oak Ridge (a suburb of Greensboro) to visit my friend and colleague M.
