I got out late this morning as we were treated to early morning thunderstorms. Once it felt safe, around 9:30, I headed over to
Tahquamenon Upper Falls . The viewpoints are accessed via a paved path and two sets of steps on either end. While no people are playing in these falls because it is completely inaccessible, there is also no unobstructed view. Either foliage has grown to obscure the falls or another viewing platform with people is visible. It is also a one trick pony. I finished up pretty quickly and headed back to the
Lower Falls, which, in spite of having to work around people, has many more opportunities for creative photography choices.
I ended up spending several hours walking the Lower Falls Loop and stopping for photos. In spite of the cool temperatures, continuing threat of rain and increasing wind, some brave soles still insisted on wading or swimming. Generally, a little patience solved the problem. As I was walking back, I met Perry, Deb, Nate and Chase. Perry has done quite a bit of photography, although he gave it up when digital technology irrevocably changed the landscape. Nevertheless, we had a lot to discuss about photography as well as a wide range of other topics. The family is local, so it was interesting to talk to them about the UP and also more generally about the State of Michigan. And of course they gave me some good tips. As always, these encounters are a highlight of my day.
Because I got a late start and also spent quite a bit of time at the Lower Falls, it was already 4 PM by the time I got back to the parking lot. I didn’t want to leave without visiting Whitefish Point, so I drove out for a brief visit. There is a lighthouse and Shipwreck museum (which I did not visit). As well the area is designated as a wildlife refuge. I walked the board walk, but all of the wildlife was likely taking refuge from the weather. The wind was picking up with a vengeance, turning the beach into a sandstorm. I grabbed a few shots, then retreated to my car, just as as light rain started up again.
A few words about my lodging, as there are no chain hotels up in this remote area. I stayed at the
Magnuson Grand Lakefront Paradise . It is pretty basic, but was clean and comfortable. The staff was outstanding, which is what always makes a difference to me. When I checked in, Tim was especially helpful in helping me plan my itinerary. I would stay here again.

Tomorrow I drive West on the UP to Munising to visit Pictured Rocks.
