Twin Cities to Cedar Rapids

read the post
This morning I drove South to Cedar Rapids, IA. As advertised, I spent 5 hours looking at corn fields, currently brown as the season is almost over.

I did stop several times as the monotony was making me drowsy. My last stop, after I had crossed into IA was at a gas station store to get a snack. I took my small carton of ice cream to the front register and the young man immediately insisted that I should get the larger carton because it was actually less expensive than the smaller one. I tried to explain that I neither wanted nor needed the large size, and in fact had no way to store it before it melted. He was really upset that I was - to his mind - spending more money than necessary (by the way, we are talking about $2.99 vs. $3.99.) He finally let me go, but he was not happy about it. Welcome to Iowa!

Tomorrow I will visit some museums in town.

This sign was on the side of the road, adjacent to the Welcome to Iowa sign. I guess he is a local hero?
