You may know that CA has four seasons: fire, flood, earthquake and riots (well, that was from the 60s). The last few years we have had drought; this year we are fortunate to have rains, but they are creating flood conditions. Hwy 1, which follows the coastline, is particularly susceptible to heavy rain. It common for mudslides and rockslides to occur, or even for parts of the road to cave in or fall away.
A few years ago, a significant portion of the road in the Big Sur area literally fell into the ocean. It was finally repaired and reconstructed, but the locals were greatly impacted for an extended period of time.
We have received a lot of rain over the last couple of weeks, and yesterday it saw both steady and heavy. As a result, debris was apparently washed into the hwy on both sides of the road leading to Big Sur. Fortunately, it sounds like “just” debris and no road damage. Currently the road is closed. Hopefully crews can remove the debris this morning as there is a break in the rain and the road will open, allowing me to reach my first destination.
