This morning I went looking for wildlife. I first tried the Meaher State Park, situated in the wetlands of North Mobile Bay. I was hoping to shoot waterfowl from the boardwalk - which was closed for renovation. Not a huge loss as I did not see many birds around. I was told that ‘gators were also in the area, but that it was too cold for them to be out sunning themselves.
I then headed a couple of miles across the bay to Gator Alley Boardwalk in search of gators. Not a one. A lone turtle climbed out on a log to sun itself.
In the afternoon I drove down to Dauphin Island to visit the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. Really this is a general wildlife sanctuary. Not much in the way of birds, but I did see some more turtles in the lake. There was one gator, hiding out in the brush at the edge of the lake. But he was not coming out to play.
While at the sanctuary, I heard there was a bald eagle nest off one of the streets in town. I did not see the nest (I later heard it was a few streets away from what I had been told), but I was lucky to find a bald eagle, probably mom. I’m not great at spotting stationary birds, but I saw it fly in to sit in a tall pine, where I had a good 10 minutes to shoot it.
Tomorrow I’ll drive down to Gulf shores do a Kayak trip out on the bay
