This morning I drove North, up to the edge of Lake Superior again. It was a glorious early Fall day, and as I drove North, I was treated to the start of Fall colors.
Northern Wisconsin, like the other Great Lakes States is all about the waterfalls. Because I had a bit of time before I could check into my lodging, I stopped at Interstate Falls, so called because it splits the border with Michigan. It was a short third of a mile hike in to a lovely falls, and I found several nice vantage points, both at the main falls and at other points along the river.
I then stopped at Saxon Falls. The initial view was a few steps from the parking lot. However, it was a side view, screened off by a fence. It looked like a nice falls, but there was no way to photograph it. I saw a trail, so I wondered if that might give me a better vantage point. After some quite steep and muddy ascents and descents, all I had to show for my efforts was a muddy backside. The trail took me to the top of the falls, but not in a way such that you could see down without wading into the water. After a few steps on some very unstable stepping stones, I nixed that idea as just too dangerous, and slip-slid my way back to the parking lot.
I have many options for falls tomorrow, so hopefully I will find some that have better access. Rain is predicted for the early morning, hopefully it will clear up by the time I head out.
