Today I traveled West to Illinois, and also crossed back into central time. I wanted to find something of interest in IL other than Chicago, so I decided to stop for a couple of nights in the
Shawnee National Forest . The main attraction, other than lots of trees, is
Garden of the Gods. This is a different Garden of the Gods than the one near Colorado Springs.
Like many other of these remote areas, there are no chain lodgings, just camping and cabins. I had booked a cabin at
Timber Ridge and was wondering what I would find. I drove onto the property, but did not immediately see an office at which to check in. I was just checking my confirmation e-mail when Andrew, one of the owners, walked up to my car and reminded me that check in was a couple of miles away at the Garden of the Gods Outpost, a small store that sells foodstuffs and souvenirs at the crossroads near the entrance to the Garden of the Gods area. I drove over and Hallie got me checked in.
Since it was still pretty early, and I had clouds, I decided to check out the area as I knew that at least the beginning of it was accessible via a short trail. I ended up spending longer than I anticipated, in part because the forecast called for bright sun tomorrow. As well, the scorching temperatures and high humidity have returned. The downside to going in the middle of the day, especially on a Saturday, were the crowds of people. The summer must be a zoo. I was rather surprised that climbing on the ancient rock formations was allowed. They are covered with lichen, which is a slow growing organism, easily destroyed by foot traffic. On the first formation, you can see where the lichen has been worn away by many feet, hands and butts. As well, the limestone itself is relatively soft rock and subject to damage. Well, at least I know what to expect tomorrow morning, when I hope the area will be less crowed.
After dragging myself away from the stunning scenery, I drove back to my cabin to get settled. I’m very impressed with this lodging. It is a rustic cabin, but has clearly been updated. I can see that the windows are new, and it is equipped with AC and internet that is better than some hotels. Someone put some thought into the furnishings, which are very tasteful. The kitchen comes with full size appliances and is fully equipped. I would definitely stay here again.
Tomorrow, the plan it to return to the Garden of the Gods early, then possibly explore other destinations in the area.
