I knew today was going to be a challenge because of the predicted rainstorm. The thunder and lightening never materialized, but it did come down all morning. I used the time to do some trip planning and take care of some other paperwork.
When I saw that there seemed to be a break, I walked the couple of blocks to
Brewbakers , a coffee shop that had been recommended yesterday by the women I met in the park. This place features organic coffee, some rather California-esque food choices and a great atmosphere. Very coffee house, sit down and stay awhile. Which I did.
It seemed the storm was starting to dissipate, so I took the opportunity to make a quick trip out to
Rhododendron State Park. The bloom is supposed to peak in this area in mid-July and the
reports I read from a few days ago sounded encouraging. However, when I arrived, the pickings were rather slim. I could see that there were lots of bushes, just very few flowers, and even fewer plants with many blooms. As well, there were literally rivers gushing over the trail from the morning rains. One that I forded sent water over the tops of my boots. The loop was pretty short and, as it was still unclear what the rest of the afternoon would bring, I decided to call it.
Driving back into town, I remembered that I still needed a NH state shot glass. Literally across the street from my hotel is a wonderfully curated arts and craft store, the
Hannah Grimes Marketplace . All of the wares are made by local artists and entrepreneurs and the quality is remarkably high. It feels like shopping in a museum, and really it was better than many museum stores I have visited. I purchased several gifts and spent some time chatting with Justin, the manager; it is was clear that he took great pride in the shop and the artists. And yes, I did find a simple and elegant NH state shot glass.
The weather looks clear tomorrow and my goal is to hike Mount Monadnock. It is unclear how muddy the trail will be and how slick the granite rock at the top. So .... Stay tuned.
