Jackson environs

Happy Spring Solstice, may it bring warmer temperatures to the SouthEast.

Today is Monday, which of course means all of the museums are closed. So I went looking for outdoor activities, in spite of the fact that it didn’t even hit freezing until mid-morning.

I first drove a half hour North up to the Mississippi Petrified Forest in Flora. This is a privately owned site that also has a very extensive mineral and gem collection as well as a well-stocked gift shop. Well, the 6 dollar admission fee probably doesn’t add up to much. It was a nice place to spend an hour walking the half mile signed path through the dense forest and petrified logs. The resident cat joined me for part of the walk, which is apparently not uncommon.

I then drove back toward Jackson, but stopped at the LaFleur’s Bluff State Park , which turned out to be a hidden gem, similar to Moss Rock just outside of Birmingham. It has a lake and several miles of trails through dense forest and Cypress Tree swamps. I spent a very pleasant afternoon tramping through the Park as the day finally warmed up to something reasonable.

Tomorrow I will finally get to the Museums in Jackson.
