Indianapolis to Lexington

This morning I drove South and a bit East to cross into Kentucky. It was difficult to figure out where to put KY in my itinerary is it is buried pretty deep in the middle.

Since I had some time, I decided to stop off at Clifty Falls State Park in Indiana before crossing the border. It is actually very near Big Oaks NWR, I just didn’t have time to do both yesterday. The park itself is beautiful, and had I had time, a hike would have been pleasant. The falls were underwhelming. Both Big and Little Clifty Falls were so obscured by foliage they were hardly worth photographing. I did grab a shot of Big Clifty Falls, but I consider it docIumentary. Little Clifty Falls was barely visible through the foliage. There was a small window in which to photograph Tunnel Falls. Oddly, the railing stopped just short of the spot, so it was a bit heart-stopping as I was a few inches from a steep drop-off. Hoffman Falls had good viewing access, but it was not running. I was surprised that the woman at the entrance booth did not know that because it was once of the places she specifically mentioned I should visit.

I then made my was back over the Ohio River to enter Kentucky. As I exited the bridge, I really felt like I was entering a completely different environment. All of a sudden I was on narrow two lane roads winding through iconic KY farmland. The scenery was bucolic, but unfortunately those same two lane roads with no shoulder left no place to pull over. It was all I could do to concentrate on avoiding oncoming traffic.

Hopefully I will get a chance to make some images tomorrow on the Bluegrass Parkway.
