Columbia to Charleston

This morning I drove from Columbia to Charleston.

I arrived midday, so I had time to walk around downtown and get oriented. I first went over to rainbow row as that was advertised as a photo-op. Rainbow row is a row of historical houses painted in pastel colors. While attractive, they are very difficult to photograph as the street is lined with cars.

I visited Tavern wine and spirits - The Tavern at Rainbow Row - is the oldest liquor store in America, established in 1686. Apparently Charleston gave mostly lip service to prohibition and officials just looked the other way. This particular store operated under a barber shop storefront and sold “hair tonic.” The liquor was brought in through tunnels connected to the sewer system.

I finally found a place to order the requisite shrimp and grits as I did not want to leave the Low Country without trying that dish at least once. The version served at Amen Street Fish and Raw Bar was excellent.

I then walked off dinner with a stroll through Waterfront Park. I met a gentlemen poking around in the detritus at the water’s edge. He explained that erosion and water action continue to wash up arrowheads and other historical artifacts, which he collects.

Tomorrow I have a trip to Bulls Island planned. Stay tuned.
