This morning I drove the hour out to the South Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge . I’d had good luck with the previous refuges I had visited, so I had high hopes for this one as well. It was a pleasant day, but for some reason the birds, in particular, were virtually absent today. I saw a few forest birds, and heard many more, but the waterfowl were apparently elsewhere.

I met Alex, who works for the adjacent Cheraw State Park and was visiting the NWR on his day off. We kept running into each other at the various stops and would compare notes. He also was surprised at the lack of waterfowl. I did find and photograph a few other species - a butterfly and some turtles. But otherwise it was a somewhat disappointing day for wildlife photography.

Tomorrow I drive back to the Coast to visit Charleston.
