This morning I said goodbye to Charleston and drove the hour East to Fayetteville. In retrospect, I should have spend more time here and in the Northeastern panhandle. I had no idea that West Virginia contained such striking and beautiful landscapes. It will be on my list for a return visit.
In the meantime I had this afternoon and two more full days to explore the Fayetteville area. I arrived midday and was welcomed to the Historic Morris Harvey House by Eric and Natalie, the relatively new proprietors. There are no Marriott properties in the area, so I am staying at my first B&B of this trip. This is a lovely historic property with a lot of interesting history . Eric and Natalie moved here from California during the pandemic, so we had a lot to discuss.
The highlight of this area is the New River Gorge National Park . A main feature is actually the bridge that spans the gorge. But the park contains many and varied landscapes. Today was, unfortunately, clear and sunny. Natalie recommended the Endless Wall trail as a good activity for this afternoon because much of it is under canopy and would have at least some shade. It was a good recommendation. Although it was still a struggle, I managed to capture at least a few shots. Hopefully the weather the next two days will be more cooperative.
While the B&B is not yet full (Summer is high season here as there are many opportunities for outdoor adventure activities) a few other people are also staying here. This evening I met Evelyn, also from California. Evelyn is 82 and still going very strong. She is completing her list of visiting all National Parks and is close to achieving that goal. We had a nice conversation about travel, both within the U.S. and internationally.
Tomorrow I will continue to explore New River Gorge. Hoping for cloudy skies!
