This morning I took the ferry out to Bulls Island . This barrier island is located in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge and is the most wild of the barrier islands. The ferry ride is 30 minutes each way and I was able to spend the entire day on the island. The waters and the island host a plethora of wildlife. I saw dozens of alligators. Actually I am starting to get gatored out, something I would not have predicted when I was searching for my first ‘gators in Alabama. The bird life, both forest and water fowl were still scarce, difficult to see and more difficult to photograph.
One of the main attractions of Bulls Island is the bone yard, a stretch of beach that hosts a driftwood forest. I spent a couple of hours just on this beach trying to capture the dead trees. Unfortunately, low tide was at 2:30 PM, so the light was harsh. I decided to make light-ade by converting these images to black and white. See what you think.
I will continue to explore Charleston and the surrounding area tomorrow.
