Bristol [Quechee Gorge]

This morning I drove an hour and a half South to visit Quechee Gorge . From the web site description, this sounded like a unique geological site that would make for some nice photographic opportunities. What I didn’t know was 1) the trail was closed due to flooding and 2) both the trail and the bridge overlook are screened by 10 foot high green cyclone fences. The bridge overlook has some small holes that might be used as photographic openings. Except they were obviously made by 6 foot tall workers and are also set too far back to get any sort of decent camera angle. It is literally impossible to photograph the gorge the way they have it set up. This was, as you might imagine, quite frustrating.

I decided to drive back to Bristol to explore a couple of falls close to the town, Bristol Falls and Bartlett Falls . Both of these falls are in the middle of the New Haven River, adjacent to the road. Bristol Falls has an actual parking lot. I hiked down to the river and was able to make some images. This is not a single obvious falls, but a series of stair step falls. The light was still pretty harsh, so it was a challenge. Bartlett Falls can be seen from the road only as a glimpse in one direction. And to hike down to it meant braving a forest of Poison Ivy. So that idea got scratched.

Before returning to my lodgings, I drove over to Middlebury, where I had identified a gift shop that might carry Vermont Shot glasses, Vermont’s Own Gifts and Goods . They indeed had the requisite shot glasses as well as other nice items.

I am not yet sure what I am doing tomorrow, but it will likely involve shorter driving distances.
