Today I drove from Birmingham to Mobile. There were many natural history destinations in the far North of the State that I was not able to visit. I would definitely return to explore those areas. I also will miss both Montgomery (home to the Legacy Museum and Memorial ) and Selma (site of the famous march). I will hope to visit both on a future trip. So much to do and see in Alabama! But I did want to get down to the Gulf Coast.
I was able to make a quick stop at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa . K had suggested this destination as her daughter had attended the school and she thought the campus was worth seeing. Because this week is Spring break the campus was deserted. But K was right, it is a beautiful campus, all graceful architecture and Greek columns. I apparently looked a bit lost as Patrick, a student, stopped to ask me is I needed help finding anything. That was a nice bit of Southern friendliness to encounter. K had also directed me to Taco Mama for lunch. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but in fact I got a great salad for a reasonable price and was able to enjoy it in the sunshine.
I arrived in Mobile in time to make a quick stop at Cooper Riverside park . The East waterfront of the City of Mobile turns out to be where the industrial ship docks are located, and also the railroad. I had to cross the tracks to get to the waterfront and had the bad luck to arrive just as a very loooooong train was moving through. The crossing eventually cleared and I got my walk on the docks.
As today was a travel day, there is a dearth of images.
