Arkansas to Tennessee

I mistakenly said at the end of yesterday’s post that I had not been to Tennessee. That was incorrect; I was here in Memphis on a work trip a few years ago. So it is nice to be back and to able to explore the city in a different way.

Arkansas and Tennessee are separated by the Mississippi River. So the Welcome to Tennessee sign is not only on a freeway, but on a bridge. Obviously I was not stopping, so that image is yet another web capture.

When I arrived, I could see that the dusk and sunset was promising because of the clearing storm. I had hoped to walk over to Mud Island Park , a spit that extends into the river, but unfortunately they closed the pedestrian bridge at 4:45. Sunset was not until 6:00. So I had to exercise my creative muscles to try to find a situation to capture the sky with some sort of foreground. I took a few images from another park on the near side of the river. Note the image with a mirror image Memphis sign - it is intended to be viewed only from a boat on the river. Ultimately I was reduced to opening the window from my fourth floor room to capture the sunset, with a least a few trees as foreground.

I went down to the bar at the Moxy Memphis downtown and had a lovely chat with Jessica who was working the hotel counter and Ally, the bartender. Jessica is originally from Italy and settled in Memphis because she was drawn to the music.

Tomorrow, my first stop will be the Civil Rights Museum . I had visited on my previous trip, but I feel it requires another visit because of its importance.
